Mercy Health Clinic (Mercy) provides healthcare to medically underserved, low-income residents of Montgomery County and is committed to providing high quality medical care, health education and pharmaceuticals to eligible patients free of charge.  We are seeking an energetic, creative person to build and enhance the volunteer programs at Mercy Health Clinic through a year of service in the AmeriCorps Program. This program is managed by Volunteer Maryland (VM) and the candidate will work directly at Mercy Health Clinic. This is an excellent opportunity to assist a volunteer driven nonprofit organization in fulfilling their mission of providing care for medically underserved patients regardless of their ability to pay!


The Volunteer Maryland AmeriCorps Member (VMAM) at Mercy will recruit and maintain new volunteers and will also manage a targeted effort to recruit bilingual volunteers, including scribes; interpreters; eligibility screeners; nurses; physicians; medical assistants and development professionals. In addition, the VMAM will also revise and edit a range of volunteer program materials, including the program vision statement; evaluation and evaluation process; volunteer position descriptions; recruitment materials; training best practices and volunteer recognition protocols including an appreciation week guideline.


This is an 11 month, full-time (40 hours/week) position as a VMAM serving at Mercy Health Clinic in Gaithersburg, MD.  The VMAM service year begins on September 6, 2017 and concludes on July 31, 2018. The VMAM is required to complete 1,700 hours of service during the term.



Full-time AmeriCorps Members receive a living stipend of $13,250 (pending funding), an education award of $5,775, and health insurance if they are not already covered.  They may also qualify for a child care allowance.  Other benefits include mileage reimbursement for site-related travel, student loan deferment, professional training, valuable networking opportunities, working with a dedicated team of AmeriCorps members and staff, and making a real difference in a local community.



-Develop recruitment, orientation and training materials based on best practices agreed upon by the on-site supervisor:

  • Continue development of program materials such as a policy and procedure manual, volunteer position descriptions, promotional fliers or brochures, and screening, training, and evaluation tools.

-Lead recruitment and training efforts:

  • Recruit volunteers using outreach methods such as presentations to faith, business and/or community groups; staffing information booths at community events; and utilizing social and traditional media.
  • Develop and facilitate orientation and training for volunteers.
  • Screen volunteers as necessary which may include interviews, reference checks, and criminal background checks.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships to support the volunteer program.


-Manage Volunteers:

  • Work with staff to complete a volunteer needs assessment.
  • Create and monitor a volunteer calendar that details both filled and open positions and shifts.
  • Develop and implement recognition activities for volunteers such as special events, awards, gifts, including activities for national volunteer week, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation.
  • Evaluate progress made in achieving the program’s goals; report on progress in statistical and narrative reports for Volunteer Maryland.



  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work independently to develop and implement a successful volunteer program.
  • Experience or a drive to build interpersonal relationships, to work effectively as part of a team (at the Service Site and with his/her class of VMCs), and to manage volunteers.
  • Strong verbal and written skills to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and community groups.
  • A knack for effective written communication in effort to develop program materials and reports.
  • A commitment to the concept of national service and to making a difference in his/her community.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers and be able to produce program materials and track volunteer hours.
  • Ability to respond to organizational change productively and maintain positive attitude.



Volunteer Maryland AmeriCorps Members are required to serve approximately 40 hours each week.  At Mercy, the office hours will be 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; with flexibility if needed for meetings and events.  Volunteer Maryland training days are 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.



The AmeriCorps Members’ office will be located at 7 Metropolitan Court; suite 1, MD; (this location has access to public transportation; Montgomery County Ride-on buses: 61, 71 & 78 stop at the corner of Metropolitan Grove Road and Metropolitan Court.  MARC’s Metropolitan Grove station is across the street.  VM training locations will be held at locations throughout Maryland.  Please note: locations may not be accessible by public transportation.
